Assessment
Informal Assessment: During the class, students get a chance to share the game they are creating. During the share, the teacher highlights creative aspects of their game and makes suggestions when appropriate. The goal of this is really to highlight students' creativity and point out that everyone has the ability to produce unique and creative content.Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 7
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Availability- If you don’t see a time posted that works for you, or you would like to sign up for a longer block of weeks, please feel free to reach out to me and I will work with you to schedule sessions that fit your family's schedule. ------------------------------------- Roblox gives students an entry point into game design and coding that is fun and prepares them for more advanced creation both in Roblox Studio and beyond. The Lua coding language used in Roblox Studio is also one of the more user-friendly scripting languages. It is easy for beginners to start with and can help advanced users grow in their understanding of coding and object-oriented programming. I am a veteran of teaching Roblox Studio and making coding/game design concepts understandable for kids. Instruction is also tailored to a student’s previous experience. If a student is just starting out in Roblox studio, the tutoring starts with basic building and coding concepts. If a student has previous experience using Roblox Studio, instruction is designed to build upon that experience and take their abilities to the next level. ------------------------------------- The pace of the instruction is based of what is comfortable for the student. If a student wants to take more time with a concept, the I will review until the student is ready to move on. If a student is picking up concepts quickly, I will move at a faster pace to keep the student engaged. Students learn to build games from start to finish. Through the tutoring sessions, students are able to build and code entire video games that they can publish for others to play. After each tutoring session, parents receive a short summary of what the student worked on in the class. ------------------------------------- Roblox Game Design Tutoring: First 8 Levels Level 1 Basic 3D Modeling, Intro to Object-Oriented Programming, Basic Functions and Events, Checkpoints (Save Points). Level 2 Adding Visual Effects, Spawning Objects During Gameplay, Loops, Variables, Coordinate System. Level 3 Player Health and Humanoid Properties, Powerups, Logic in Code, Parameters. Level 4 Coding Multiple Objects, Buttons and Traps, Advanced 3D Modeling, Click Events Level 5 Tools and Weapons, Animation, Coding Tool and Weapon Behavior. Level 6 Using Variables to Store Game Information, Game Menus, and GUI. Level 7 Building an NPC Rig, Coding NPC Behavior and AI, NPC Tracking. Level 8 Game Physics, Creating and Coding Vehicles, Game Mechanics. ------------------------------------- It’s more than just coding and game design. While students learn how to create games and code in Roblox Studio, I also help them improve in the critical-future ready skills below. Lessons are integrated with the curriculum to help students apply these skills in coding and game design. Creativity (Ex. Divergent Thinking) Problem Solving (Ex. Computational Thinking) Collaboration Empathy For Others (Ex. Human-Centered Design) Communication (Ex. Presenting Work) Adaptability Perseverance (Ex. Growth Mindset) Self-Directed Learning ------------------------------------- Safety: Parents can choose to have their child not publish their game on Roblox. A game can be created in Roblox studio (a separate program) and not published. Students can create and play their game without ever taking it online. IMPORTANT -- We do not use the toolbox in this class. The toolbox consists of models and other items created and scripted by other players. We stay away from the toolbox for two reasons. One, students won't learn how to create and script their own items by using other players' creations. Two, toolbox items can contain viruses that destroy your game. Please discuss this with your child prior to class. --Typing skills are important in this class. Students do not have to be perfect at typing as the code editor helps with words, but they should be comfortable with typing words and finding keys on the keyboard. A Roblox account is required for this program. An account is free and can be setup at https://www.roblox.com/ Students must download the Roblox Studio program to their Mac or PC to be able to create their games. This program is free and can be downloaded at https://www.roblox.com/create . IMPORTANT: Roblox Studio only works on a Mac or PC. It does not work on tablets or Chromebooks.

I have been teaching technology, coding, and 21st century skills for nearly 20 years. I am a certified elementary teacher in PA and have a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I also have run my own educational technology business in the past. My goal is to help kids learn the skills they need in today's world, but also help them believe they can be the creators of new technology instead of simply consuming it.
