In this lesson, students will be able to create a polar bear and use watercolor to paint it. I will be discussing the elements of art as we draw and paint and I will teach basic watercolor techniques, hints, and tricks. I will first do a directed drawing of the polar bear while students follow along and then we will be painting our background on a separate piece of paper. Students will improve their understanding of drawing and the watercolor painting technique. They will also improve their understanding of the elements of art, specifically line, form, value, and color.
The supplies for this lesson are white paper (thick if possible), another piece of construction paper that is light green, light grey, light purple, or light blue, a black crayon or sharpie marker, watercolors, a water dish, a paint brush, glue, and scissors.
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Students may need help with using the scissors to cut out the polar bear.
