In this class, students will read a variety of stories from many sources in each language. We will do comprehension questions or other writing activities for each story. We will start formal study of grammar and compare French and English.

Class experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Intermediate - Advanced Level
Students will read, speak, listen, and write using the two languages French and English equally, at an age/grade appropriate level. We will explore various samples of literature and some non-fiction reading in both. We will practice using the web wisely to look up things we don't know and other facts we would like to know. We will practice writing full sentence and short paragraph answers to a wide variety of questions and writing prompts. In grammar, we will study the parts of speech, preparatory to learning the construction of sentences in later parts of the course. We will explore the similarities (many!) between French and English sentence construction, and the minor but important differences.
Hello! I have been teaching since 1974 and tutoring privately since 1984. I've been on Outschool since 2019. I've taught a lot of people to read, write, and speak. I work with students with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, as well as those who just fell through the cracks. I also teach reading in French (which I speak and read fluently), reading in English, high school French, and advanced mathematics for college and university.
I keep up to date with reading about the latest in reading and I education and I participate actively in educational Facebook pages.
My academic background includes a BSc from MIT, MA in Education from Tufts University, Honours BA in Mathematics and double major in Foreign Languages and linguistics from Bishop's University in Quebec. I also studied for three years in graduate school math but had to leave for health reasons (respiratory failure of unknown cause). After some years teaching in classrooms from K to college level and four decades tutoring, I now live semi-retired in a Quebec village.

A certificate of completion may be provided on request.
I teach kids with ASD and ADHD and I'm open to more. Please drop me a message and we can talk about your needs.
A minimum of Grade 3 (first language) level reading in both English and French and should be able to construct a complete sentence answer in both languages, in both speech and writing. Students must be mature enough for grammar lessons
Students coming from my previous Read in French classes will already have "Ratus Decouvre les Livres" (red book) and the related workbook.
As we will be doing only a few selected exercises from the workbook, new students can check with me about printing a few pages. I will send a link.

If possible students should obtain the Ratus red textbook. It is widely available from Amazon, Renaud-Bray, and many others; used copies my be found on eBay. Either edition will work as the differences are minor.

The reader we are using in English is long out of print. We use it *for educational purposes only*, not to be copied for publication, further copies, or resale.
I will send a link to workbook pages to copy as needed.

The grammar book is Spectrum Language Arts Grade 4. It is widely available commercially. In this course we are only using a small section so you may copy from my links *for educational purposes only*, not to share or publish.

Students need a comfortable place to work, a chair with foot support, and a good light. They need both a keyboard and a writing space for notebooks.

Please get a simple notebook for students to take notes and to practice written exercises. We are moving away from workbooks and into more writing.
Pens are much preferred as writing tools; they waste less time than pencils, they are less fatiguing on hands, and the writing is visible.

This is a highly interactive class in which students speak more than the teacher. Students need a camera and a microphone and need to leave them turned on during class so they can interact fully.

Since students need to talk, please finish snacks before we start, thank you.
Stories chosen are appropriate for the age/grade level, assuming an average of about Grade 4-5 age 10-11. At this age sometimes violence and inappropriate behaviour are described, in order to have action and plot. Gratuitous violence is avoided. Questions about sexuality -- normal at this age -- will be referred back to parents.
We will be using the web as a resource for language, vocabulary, facts, music, and images. The teacher will model searching in a directed way for educational purposes. However, trolls lurk everywhere and on rare occasions inappropriate vocabulary and very rarely images may show up. These sites will be closed immediately and the teacher will give a short message about appropriate and useful web use.
