In this class, students will play a Gimkit game to practice various concepts with fractions. We will solve questions that involve equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, identifying fractions on a number line, and improper fractions. The questions almost all use visuals to help students develop a concrete understanding of fractions. This class is primarily focused on practicing and applying skills with fractions; we will not spend a lot of time discussing strategies for solving the questions. I recommend having students enroll in my Freedom With Fractions class prior to this class, if they are looking for instruction on how to find equivalent fractions, compare fractions, identify fractions on a number line, or identify improper fractions. This class is for students to practice and apply those skills. Gimkit is a game that students join from their device by going to gimkit.com/join. They then enter a code to join the live game. There are various versions of the game, and we will cycle through them throughout the month. The schedule will run as follows: First Week of the Month: We will play the Classic version of Gimkit. In this game, students earn money by answering questions correctly. They are able to buy different things in the game with their money. Second Week of the Month: We will play the Fishtopia style, which is like a video game. Students have a character who can answer questions to earn bait, and then use the bait to fish, and then they can sell their fish for cash. They can then pay for upgraded gear for their character or they can take a boat ride to visit other areas in the game. Third Week of the Month: We will play the Classic version of Gimkit. In this game, students earn money by answering questions correctly. They are able to buy different things in the game with their money. Fourth Week of the Month: We will play the Fishtopia style, which is like a video game. Students have a character who can answer questions to earn bait, and then use the bait to fish, and then they can sell their fish for cash. They can then pay for upgraded gear for their character or they can take a boat ride to visit other areas in the game. Fifth Week of the Month (if there is a fifth week): We will play a short game of the Classic version of Gimkit and a short game of Fishtopia.
