In this single meeting class for early elementary students, we will meet the world-famous artist Andy Warhol and learn about his contribution to the pop art genre. Students will examine his art, and practice visual intake and verbal expression through describing the art and their thoughts about it in a group discussion led by the teacher. We will complete this lesson by creating our own works of art in similar styles. This course is geared to help students learn about art styles, art...
The students will learn about the artist Andy Warhol, his ideas about art and his contributions to the pop art movement. We will examine some of his famous and popular art works featuring Campbell's soup, Coca-Cola, Mickey Mouse, Queen Elizabeth. We will discuss the silk-screening process that he used to create his art. We finally will complete our own works of art using a choice of printed Campbell's soup images or real soup cans per the student's choice. Details about this art project are listed in the materials section of the course. The art project will be begun in class and students may also continue to complete it after class if they would like additional time. Learners are invited to post their finished work in the classroom to share with one another.
I am offering this class because I love art and have taught painting in the past.
There is no required homework.
4 files available upon enrollmentThe student has a choice of two art projects to complete in class featuring the pop art style. The learner can choose either the print out of Campbell's soup cans or making a 3d soup can. The print out is provided in the course materials upon enrollment. The student may bring it to class along with brightly colored markers or crayons to complete the artwork together during the lesson. Students who wish to make a soup can can bring a 3 and 1/2 by 8 and 1/2 inch white paper, a pencil, tape, markers and a Campbell's soup can to class. We will fix the paper to the can with tape and the student will be led to trace the image on the can and create their own unique "flavor" or soup featuring atypical colors and whimsical drawings. Images of an example are provided in the course materials upon enrollment.
This is an enrichment class for student enjoyment. It does not contain an assessment.
35 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Andy Warhol created many works of art in his lifetime. Some of his work does contain nudity or controversial subject matter. In this class, because the learners are young, I have only chosen images that focus on the pop art style, are interesting to children and are appropriate for all ages. I have not included any images containing nudity or any images depicting controversial subject matter. Parents can continue to study additional works by this artist as a supplement to this class as they see fit at home. In this class children will examine images of Campbell's Soup, Coca-Cola, Queen Elizabeth's face, Mickey Mouse, Marilyn Monroe's face, a picture of a shoe, a picture of a cow and a picture of a butterfly from the endangered species series.
