Finding the Story in Everything
Storytelling isn't just for fiction writers, or even for all writers. It's an art that's crucial to communication itself. This is a one-hour class on how to be a better communicator, by seeing the story in everything that happens to you.

This is a one-hour lecture on how to find inspiration as a storyteller. It doesn't focus on writing technique or style. It can just help you learn to see everything in your world in terms of storytelling. To turn your everyday experiences into stories that people will want to read and hear. We'll talk about the kinds of stories that everyone knows how to tell, to show how it's possible for anyone to be a storyteller. We'll talk about what makes a good story, and all the different kinds of...
Students will learn an approach to storytelling that can help them tell more stories, and better stories, by looking for story ideas in their own everyday experiences. Not every story has to be something you can make a movie out of. There are great stories hiding all around us every day in plain sight, and we mostly never recognize them. This class is designed to open our eyes to all the stories we've been missing.
I've been writing short fiction for more than 25 years, and at times I've done journalism as well. I've worked as a development assistant for a Hollywood production company, taking raw ideas and helping to turn them into scripts for films and TV series. And I'm the writer and producer of an original podcast called The Reflectory, where every episode is a new collection of true stories from my own everyday experience.
No prerequisites for this class. You'll get more out of it if you've at least tried to write your own stories in the past. But even if you've only thought about doing it, you'll be welcome. Maybe you'll be inspired to write your first one!
No real supplies required. I would recommend coming with a pen and a pad of paper, or any device you would normally use for creative writing, just in case you get inspired while we're talking.
No specific source materials required for this class. I may refer to certain ideas that can be found in books or articles, or examples of stories that almost everyone knows. But we won't be reading any stories or instructional texts for the class itself.
I've worked in Hollywood for the past 18 years, splitting my time between writing and sound engineering. I was the music editor on So You Think You Can Dance for five seasons, and recently I was the music editor and playback operator for Season 25...
