During this class, we will learn about women's suffrage through a weekly book study to create a solid understanding of women's suffrage in the U.K. and U.S. during the 19th, and early 20th centuries by a study of 4 different books.

Class experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Students will gain a better understanding of how women's suffrage was won through a vast series of events and fought for by a variety of courageous individuals. Students will learn how to create a timeline of events and take notes in an interactive journal to allow them to discuss the historical events surrounding the Suffragette Movement that spread throughout the U.K. and U.S. in the 19th and 20th centuries.
I have a Masters in Education and a Bachelor's Degree in Social Studies and Elementary Education with over a decade in the classroom navigating difficult topics with learners. In my Master's program we worked extensively on teaching about diversity in history and the importance of representation in learning. Throughout my experience in the classroom I have created and taught many thematic units focused around the resilience, perseverance, and accomplishments of influential individuals of various backgrounds and experiences.
Homework Offered
Students will have required reading that they can complete with an adult or independently, as outlined in the Weekly Overview. Additionally, students will have a interactive notebook packet that they can print and fill in while reading and during class to help them understand what they are reading. To end our class students will create a presentation where they will share their favorite or fascinating individual that we studied in class.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class

Students will be learning about factual historical events that deal with gender and racial inequality in addition to hardships suffered by influential individuals during this class as presented in the text. Though we will touch lightly on this with a focus on resilience and perseverance, students will be re-directed to their parents if they wish to dive deeper than our planned syllabus allows due to the extensive material covered in the limited class time and the extended time needed to process and explore certain topics.
