Class Experience

Course Overview:
Embark on an interstellar journey where you'll learn the fundamentals of engineering through the captivating worlds of Factorio Space Age. This course combines the excitement of space exploration with practical engineering concepts, providing a unique learning experience for young minds eager to build, solve, and innovate.

Course Objectives:
-Introduction to Engineering Principles: Understand basic concepts like automation, logistics, resource management, and system design.
-Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: Use Factorio's complex gameplay to tackle real-world engineering challenges in a simulated environment.
-Teamwork and Project Management: Learn to collaborate on large-scale projects, managing resources and time effectively.
-Sustainability and Efficiency: Explore how to create sustainable systems that minimize waste and maximize output, mirroring real-world green engineering practices.
-Creativity and Innovation: Encourage creativity by designing unique solutions to in-game problems, fostering an innovative mindset.

What You'll Learn:
-Automation and Robotics: Design and manage automated factories to produce goods needed for space travel.
-Materials Sciences: Grasp basic understanding of material sciences through becoming familiar with many of the processes involved in the processing of raw materials into finished technology..
-Electrical Engineering Basics: Learn about power generation, distribution, and the importance of energy efficiency.
-Coding and Logic: Introduce basic programming logic through managing circuit networks in Factorio.
-Space Exploration Concepts: Understand the fundamentals of space travel, including some rocket science and extra-planetary logistics.

Class Structure:
-Weekly Sessions: Each session includes gameplay on our private class server, filled with discussion and analysis of engineering concepts encountered.
-Hands-on Projects: Groups will work on specific goals within Factorio, establishing a secure base, extracting raw materials, and processing them into many new resources
-IRL Examples: Taking examples from real-world engineering, we’ll discuss how game mechanics mirror real-life engineering problems and solutions.
-Challenges and Competitions: Participate in class-wide competitions to solve engineering puzzles or optimize factories for efficiency and scale.

Materials Needed:
-Access to Factorio game/program with Space Age DLC
-A computer with adequate specifications to run the game smoothly
-A desire to work and learn and build together

Prerequisites:
-Basic computer literacy
-An enthusiasm for building and problem-solving
-No prior engineering knowledge required; all concepts will be introduced at an appropriate level for the age group.

Outcome:
Students will leave with not only a deeper understanding of engineering principles but also with enhanced skills in problem-solving, teamwork, and strategic thinking, all while having fun in an engaging, game-based learning environment. This course aims to spark a lifelong interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Other Details

Learning Needs
Having great success with all types of student who want to learn, including many neurodiverse students, over the >4600 hours I've taught on Outschool, I'm happy to work with kids experiencing ASD, ADHD, etc!
Parental Guidance
This class will be held on Outschool Zoom, and we will also interact during class time on a private server through the engineering game Factorio. (Servers are not available outside of class time) This will require sharing gamertags with the teacher to access the server (though not posted in the classroom, etc). We will be playing in Peaceful mode, so the alien creatures that usually attack and distract will not be part of the class. This means the "violence and gore" (which is already way below most video games) will not be a part of this class.
Pre-Requisites
-Basic computer literacy -An enthusiasm for building and problem-solving -No prior engineering knowledge required; all concepts will be introduced at an appropriate level for the age group.
Supply List
-Access to Factorio game/program with Space Age DLC
-A computer with adequate specifications to run the game smoothly
-A desire to work and learn and build together
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Sources
We will use the Factorio Program/game and it's Space Age DLC

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching engineering and rocket science on Outschool for 4 years, with 4600 hours in class, with 1200 students. These students have grown to even more real-life engineering experiments, including sending experiments to space, becoming analog astronauts, and designing/building many things in real life.
