Exploring the World of Bees With Science and Craft

The class will start with introductions and listening to what the students may already know about bees. We will talk about bees as insects, their basic body parts and how they may be similar or different to other insects. We will colour in a bee pointing out each body part. We will introduce each bee job in the hive and talk about the role and life of the queen. We will discuss how bees communicate and why they are important to the environment and to humans. We will explore pollination and do a simple experiment together. Students are welcome to just watch me do it or to do the experiment with me. Students will have a chance to ask questions. My teaching style is collaborative and I would like every child who is keen, to take part. If a child prefers to observe in silence, that's fine too! If you have a student who is younger than 10, I have another class covering the same concepts for younger students.

By the end of the class, students will have learned about the life of bees and why they are important.

Supply List
If your student would like to draw the bee during class, please print out the sheet provided and make sure they have something to draw and colour in with. If they would like to do our easy pollination experiment, they will also need the following supplies: 1. Flower print out on coloured paper of their choice or on white paper plus colours to colour it in during class. 2. A small bowl of flour 3. A pipe cleaner, cotton ball, piece of felt or other fluffy material the flour can stick to.

I am a science communicator of 20 years with experience teaching science concepts to children in an engaging, interactive way. I have also been a beekeeper for the past 7 years, focusing on the health and natural keeping of bees, rather than on maximising production.
