Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner Level
Have you ever wondered how everything in the universe works and how everything is interrelated? In this 15-week course, we will "Explore the Scales of the Universe: From Subatomic to Space!" We will cover a wide range of subjects including physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, math, and astronomy.

This course is perfect for learners who want to understand the fundamentals of everything in our physical universe including subatomic particles, atoms, molecules, biology scales, how computers work, light, sound, fractals, comets, meteors, asteroids, planets, stars, nebulae, galaxies, and the cosmos! Students will learn how the metric system works, what we can learn at different scales, how small and large things can get, and how all of the scales are interrelated. We will also cover scientific notation such that learners understand its purpose and develop a functional understanding that will aid them in their futures.

The course consists of presentations, video demonstrations, interactive online applets, and in-class discussions to foster curiosity. Each week, we will focus on a particular scale or concept and we will build our understanding from the ground up. I encourage learners to ask questions and I will do my best to answer as many as time allows.

Learning Goals

Students will learn how to understand the metric system and scientific notation. They will also learn about physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, math, and astronomy with a focus on how the scales of the universe interrelate.

15 Lessons
over 15 Weeks
Lesson 1:
The Metric System and Scientific Notation
We will learn how the metric system works, what orders of magnitude are, and how scientific notation works. We will use an interesting interactive online applet to gain an intuitive understanding of these concepts. The material learned in this week will be used in all future weeks.
55 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Subatomic Particles
We will learn about the standard model of particle physics, where we will discuss the subatomic particles including quarks, leptons, and bosons, and their associated properties. We will also talk about the differences between matter and antimatter.
55 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Atoms
We will learn about the periodic table of elements and gain a fundamental understanding of the differences between these elements. We will also discuss what subatomic particles make up atoms and how nuclear fusion and fission work.
55 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Molecules and Compounds
We will learn how atoms can bond together to form molecules and compounds with covalent and ionic bonding. This will include video demonstrations of various common chemical reactions. We will also gain a basic understanding of phase changes and learn exactly what organic chemistry is.
55 mins online live lesson
