Class Experience

In this two week course, students will go through the writing process while learning how to write an expository/informational essay. Students will be given an essay prompt and we will go through how to brainstorm on the prompt, write drafts (one paragraph at a time), format the essay, and edit/revise. Mrs. O will model each step of the process and provide students with tools for them to use anytime they are writing!

Week 1 Day 1 - Brainstorming and First Draft
Week 1 Day 2 - Formatting & Introduction/Conclusion
Week 2 Day 1 - Editing and Revising
Week 2 Day 2 - Sharing Out and Quick-write practice

I have a degree in Journalism and have been teaching writing for the last 2.5 years. I also have great knowledge in what is typically included in a state writing test including grammatical questions and composition requirements. I have developed this writing class for students so that each step is easy to remember and understand. Many of my students used to dread writing, but after they learn the process and my easy tips, they love it!

The only requirement for this course is the ability to write in complete sentences. Brainstorming, editing/revising, and formatting will all be taught in the class!

Other Details

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! Thank you for showing interest in my classes. I was a 4th grade reading and writing teacher for 2.5 years and have experience teaching in-person and virtually. I have a degree in Journalism with an emphasis on Advertising and I am a certified teacher in Texas for all core subjects for students aged early childhood through 6th grade. I have also earned my teaching certification in ESL (English as a Second Language) and have completed professional trainings to teach AVID and GT (gifted/talented) students. I love sharing my joy of reading and helping students expand their reading skills through projects and book studies! When I'm not sharing my joy of reading or my tried & true writing techniques, I am usually baking, watching movies, or practicing yoga.

Speaking of baking, I have spent years taking college and bakery-sponsored classes to learn how to make and decorate cakes, cupcakes, cake balls, and cocoa bombs. I love baking and sharing this passion with others! What better way to show someone you care than by making them a baked good?

Please feel free to reach out with any questions you may have and I will get back to you. I am so excited to meet your student and help them learn!
