🔭🛰️ Looking for a fun and exciting way to learn about engineering and design? Join our class and explore the principles behind building structures that are strong and lightweight at the same time! ⚙️👷♂️ In this course, you will learn the fundamental concepts of mechanical, aerospace, and civil engineering and how they are applied to create long-lasting structures such as space stations, buildings, bridges, and roofs. 💻 We will simulate your design by adding loads to it. You will know if your design passed or failed. If it fails, you will see it collapse just like it is supposed to collapse in real life. You'll learn that there are many correct ways to design the structure given to you, but there is only one 'best' way. The best design by a student in class will be highlighted at the end of each class. ❗️ No prior knowledge or experience is necessary. Our class is designed to be interactive and hands-on, so bring your curiosity and creativity! We will spend the first day introducing how the design platform works while we work as a group on a few challenges and observe what makes engineering structures strong and sturdy. 🚀 Class # 1: ✅ Introduction to engineering concepts and physics used to design long-lasting structures. ✅ 3 to 5 Design Challenges where students will apply the theory to create lightweight and sturdy structures. 🚀 Class # 2: ✅ Recap of Class # 1 concepts and a discussion on how space stations are designed for strength. ✅ Students will design a space shuttle (Moon Lander) while learning weight optimization, forces, and stability through discussion and the help of the instructor. ✅ Students will have till the next class to improve their design. 🚀 Class # 3: ✅ Students will share their Moon Lander and we will discuss which designs are the most efficient and the reasons behind them. ✅ Students will work on designing bridges by taking the knowledge of the previous assignment. ✅ We will take a look at different types of bridges and how to design them. Students will have till the next class to improve their design. 🚀 Class # 4: ✅ Students will get to display their bridge designs from the previous class and we will start a new design. ✅ This class will focus on creating strong and lightweight roofs. ✅ Students will design a roof and determine how much weight it can support. 🚀 Class # 5: ✅ Students will go through everything that they learned in the design camp. ✅ We will design 3-4 surprise structures from the topic of each day (roofs, bridges, towers, etc) ❗️You will need an android, tablet, iPhone, or iPad for this class. We will extensively use Truss Me App. It is available for free on App Store and Google Store. 👨💻 Students can join the class via zoom on their phone and share their phone screens, or join through a computer and show their phone screen on a webcam whenever they want to show their design. 👩💻Make sure to download the app on your device before the class. Do not worry if it seems tricky, we will figure out together in class what the challenges are about. 🛰️🔭 Don't miss this chance to learn about engineering and design in a fun and engaging way. Join us today and see how you can become a smart designer and engineer of the future!
Learning Goals
Students will develop an understanding of the engineering principles behind designing structures that are strong, lightweight, and failure-free.
