What's included

1 live meeting
55 mins in-class hours per week
Homework
1 hour per week. There will be activities and/or worksheets (and links for some videos) I will share each week, but they are purely for the student's own enrichment and are optional. For students that join us each week I will offer up a time, during class, where learners can share what they did or watched from the previous lesson.
Assessment
There will be no formal assessments, however each lesson will include worksheets/activities that can be done independently, and at the end of each topic I will send out tests and answer keys to any parent who wants to use them with their learner. These worksheets and tests can be used to turn in to online charter schools that require proof of learning, or to add to homeschool student portfolios.

Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
This class will be a once a week natural science class for upper elementary age children. My teaching style can be described as relational, as I like to give lots of opportunities for discussion and questions. This class will include lots of beautiful pictures and helpful diagrams to aid in the learning process. Many of these photos and diagrams will be uploaded to the classroom weekly, for any learner who wants to download them. I will also upload weekly worksheets, and craft/activities ideas, as well as links to videos that expand on the topic. These are all just optional resources for parents and learners to utilize if the wish, none of them will be required for class. We will learn a new topic each month, with our topic changing over at the first class of each month. At the end of each month/topic parents may request a test and answer key for their learner to take at home. Here are the topics for the 2023 spring semester:

February: Our Solar System! This month we will be learning what a solar system is, and what is in ours. The Sun, planets, asteroids, comets, moons, dwarf planets and more!

March: All About Earth! In our March lessons we will learn about the main layers of the earth, plate tectonics, our planet's magnetic field, oceans, volcanoes, and more!

April: Zoology/Crazy World of Animals! April will be all about animals! Invertebrates, vertebrates, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish....we will learn about some of the most amazing creatures and how we classify them!

May: Amazing Plants! Our last spring topic will be plant life. We will learn about how plants help sustain all other life on earth. We will also discover different kinds of plants, where and how they grow, and how humans use them!

I will structure the lessons so that if learners don't take the previous week's class, they will still be able to learn and enjoy the class.
Learning Goals
The goal of this class is to give students a broad understanding of the world around them, through the lens of natural science. My over arching goal is that students will get a taste of these marvelous scientific observations and discoveries, and develop a curiosity to learn and explore more!

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been an educator both in the classroom, online, and at home with my own homeschooled children for the last 20 years. The natural sciences are a topic that I focused on in my own education, and that I love to teach and have specialized in over the past few years. I have taught elementary age and junior high age students topics including zoology, astronomy, biology, and geology, both in the classroom and online for the past six years.
