Class Experience

In this course, we will talk about how to draw what you see, not what you think you see! Each lesson will cover one drawing method.

Lesson 1: Blind contour drawing. Students will practice blind contour by drawing each other’s faces and some objects.
Lesson 2: Continuous contour drawing. Students will practice this method by drawing a self-portrait.
Lesson 3: Structural drawing. Students will practice this method by choosing some objects to draw in their home.
Lesson 4: Gesture drawing. Students will practice this method by choosing more objects to draw in their home. We will have a final discussion comparing all the methods of drawing.

My lessons typically include a 15-20 minute lecture with an example drawing, followed by 20-30 minutes of work time and a 10-15 minute critique.

I like to provide a good chunk of work time in-class so that students can chat and exchange ideas with peers, as well as receive feedback from me. Since this class is based in technical practice rather than projects, critiques will mostly involve group discussions about what the students like/didn't like about the technique, potential uses, and comparison to other drawing methods.
Learning Goals
Students will participate in exercises that will help them to:
1. Draw more accurately
2. Broaden their art-making toolset
3. Develop their own unique style

Supply List
This class can be completed with a sharpened 2B pencil, a pen, and paper.
The following supplies would be great to have:
A sketchbook (any is fine, Moleskine is my favorite brand for a personal sketchbook)
A set of graphite pencils ranging in hardness (for example, 6B to 5H)
A kneaded eraser
**if you have any art supply questions, feel free to ask!

*ON HIATUS*

Hi! I’m Brynn, and I graduated from BYU in Spring 2019 with a bachelor's degree in Studio Art. I am an artist by trade and have a strong background in drawing and printmaking. I live with my husband in the beautiful Utah Valley, though I was raised in the Arizona heat! I love watching TV, doing puzzles, and of course, making art.

I firmly believe that anyone can learn to create art that they are proud of. All it takes is the desire to learn and a little old fashioned hard work! In addition, I believe that making art is not all about good technique; however, good technique can be used as a tool to broaden the scope of what we can create. This is why I focus on teaching good technique alongside principles of creativity so that students can take what they've learned and develop their own style!
