Did You Know You Can Talk With Your Hands?: ASL 1

In this 12 week course, students will dig deeper into sign language learning more than the basics.  We will look into how ASL is structured, grammar, and how to engage in conversation. Students will complete tasks by interactive activities, playing games, use of worksheets, and a playful review. 

This unit will help the students learn how to sign properly and start their journey to effectively communicating with the deaf community. They will learn: the 5 parameters, finger spelling, palm orientation, and more to help them become proficient in ASL. 

I will assign homework that will require practicing something that we learned. I firmly believe repetition and constant practice will help their receptive skills. 

This class will be fast paced but lots of fun! I look forward to meeting you all!

Week 1:
30 mins: practice abc with peer partnering and practice personal information 
30 mins: numbers 1-10, greeting, and interactive fun review 

Week 2:
15 mins: start review of last class
30 mins: introduction to fingerspelling, numbers 11-20, 5 parameters and aspects of deaf culture 
15 mins: interactive fun review 

Week 3:
15mins: review of last class
30 mins: days of the week & months, seasons, introduction to classifiers, numbers 30-50
15 mins: interactive fun review 

Week 4: 
15 mins: review of last class
30 mins: manners, feelings, 5W’s, and family
15 mins: interactive fun review 

Week 5:
15 mins: review of last class
30 mins: Phrases, numbers skip count, hand shapes and animals 
15 mins: interactive fun review 

Week 6:
15 mins: review of last class
30 mins: hand shapes, colors, food, (they sign their favorite food)
15 mins: interactive fun review 

Week 7: 
15 mins: review of last class
30 mins: clothing, things around the house, the person marker, and school vocabulary 
15 mins: interactive fun review 

Week 8: 
15mins: review of last class
30 mins: time and sports (students can say their favorite sport)
15 mins: interactive fun review 

Week 9: 
15 mins: review of last class
30 mins: noun/adjectives, adjectives/adverbs, and opposites 
15 mins: interactive fun review 

Week 10: 
15 mins: review of last class
30 mins: quantity, money, and weather 
15 mins: interactive fun review 

Week 11:
15 mins: review of last class
30mins: classifiers, signs with directionality, locate, and direction, and an accumulative test
15 mins: interactive fun review 

Week 12: 
1 hour: Learn a song in sign language & no voicing and will write a biography about themself in sign.
