Beginner Level
This fun and friendly weekly class will take beginner readers to the next level through books, games, quizzes, videos, worksheets, art, writing and much more! Learners who can blend sounds to read simple 3 and 4 letter words will move onto more challenging blends such as ‘th’ and ‘ng’ as well as learning Common Exception Words such as ‘was’ and ‘they’. WHY IS READING IMPORTANT Reading is necessary for learning so instilling a love of reading at an early age is the key that unlocks the door to lifelong learning. Reading aloud presents books as sources of pleasant, entertaining, and exciting formative experiences for children to remember. Instilling a love of reading early gives a child a head start on expanding their vocabulary, and building independence and self-confidence. It helps children learn to make sense, not only of the world around them, but also of people, building social-emotional skills and of course, imagination. Reading exposes us to other styles, other voices, other forms, and other genres of writing. Not only that, but reading is a critical foundation for developing logic and problem-solving skills HOW DO WE TEACH READING AT ‘LEARNING WITH LOVE’ The United Kingdom leads the way in systematic methods for teaching children to read. Rather than just learning to sight read words, children are encouraged to use a method called synthetic phonics so that they can begin to read with only a very basic knowledge of letter sounds. This method has shown to be very motivating for children as they make very quick progress and are able to read books in a matter of weeks. OUR READING PROGRAMME Our classes are designed by a teacher with over 25 years classroom experience and a UK Masters Degree in Literacy Education, focusing on teaching children to read. They are delivered by UK qualified teachers with many years’ experience of teaching reading in the classroom. Our resources are well-designed, colourful and engaging for the children. Each lesson includes reading a book together, practising the skills to read individual words, letter and word games, understanding punctuation and writing simple words. Learners will also get a mini book to practice reading at home as well as practice worksheets to consolidate the skills learnt in the lesson. Most children will be reading simple books at the end of the 12 week cycle, with many achieving this is just 6 weeks. IS THIS CLASS SUITABLE FOR YOUR CHILD? This class is a Level 2 Reading Class. It is suitable for learners who know all of their letter sounds and can blend these sounds together to read simple 3 or 4 letter words. The class will revise all of the letter sounds as well as simple blends, such as ‘cat, miss, dogs’. They will be introduced to more complex letter sounds (zz, qu, ch, sh, th, ng, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, er) and begin to blend them together to read more complex words, such as ‘chicks, cure and diggers’. Learners will be introduced to more Common Exception Words (he, she, we, me, be, was, my, you, they, here, all, are) They will learn to read more complex sentences such as ‘She needs to feed the chicks.’ If your child only knows the letter names (a=ay, b=bee, c=cee) rather than the sounds, then our ‘Prepare To Read - Learn Your Letter Sounds (Level 0)’ classes might be a better starting point for your learner. If your child knows all of their letter sounds but cannot yet confidently blend them together to make words, then the 'Begin to Read - Learn Your Letter Blends (Level 1) ’ class might be more suitable. Once your child can read more complex sentences such as ‘She needs to feed the chicks’, then it is time to move onto our ‘Improve Your Reading - Reading Longer Sentences (Level 3) class. If you feel that the Level your child is enrolled on is not suitable then please let me know and I can transfer you to a more suitable Level. Teachers may also make recommendation to parents if they feel a child is enrolled on the wrong Level for them to make good progress.
