Creative Writing Crash Course: Prompts, Syntax, Material, Templates, and more!
In this 6-week online course, students will work through a condensed but robust exploration of creative writing, specifically fiction literature.
Class experience
This course is designed to enhance a student’s grasp of creative writing with a primary focus on fiction literature. The course will cover many exercises for enriching one’s writing. We will explore how to break through writer’s block, use prompts to give ourselves momentum, be purposeful with our syntax, develop material through day-to-day observations, bolster our efforts with templates, and find the uncanny difference between showing and telling. Students will learn many strategies for overcoming writer’s block, including the famous Brain Drain exercise. They will also explore the power of prompts: both discovering others’ and creating their own. They will learn the value of choosing words and formatting well. They will develop observational skills both for general enrichment as well as gathering material for their literature. They will practice using templates to guide the structuring of their writing. They will practice the subtle difference between showing vs. telling a story.
My foundational expertise is having been trained as a classroom teacher and receiving a 7-12 teacher certification. I have also taught writing classes and tutored writing students. I have written extensively, including the publishing—so far—of three books. Beyond that, I have been paid as a copywriter and copyeditor.
