US Grade 5 - 8
This is a course that will encourage your student's love for chemistry through engaging and interactive lessons! It will introduce students to the basics of chemistry. Labs are optional but encouraged and topics covered include: 1. Atomic Structure & Bohr Diagrams 2. Reading the Periodic Table 3. Part 3: Atoms, Molecules, Elements & Compounds (Pony Bead Lab) Materials: Pony Beads & Pipe Cleaners 4. Mixtures & Solutions (Black Magic Ink Lab) Lab Materials: scissors, white paper coffee filter, black washable marker (not permanent), water, coffee cup or mug 5. Chemical & Physical Changes (Choice between Fizzy Inflators Lab OR Making S'Mores Lab) Lab Materials: -Fizzy Inflators ( One small empty plastic soda or water bottle, 1/2 cup of vinegar, Small balloon, Baking soda, Funnel or piece of paper OR -S'Mores Lab (marshmallows, Hershey bars, graham crackers) 6. Rates of Chemical Reactions & Behavior of Matter My course learning resources include videos, interactives, presentations with guided notes, hands-on activities, demonstrations, labs, classroom discussions as well as analytical and critical thinking. Students will complete a final project by choosing one activity from a choice menu that will be provided when the course begins. A flex course allows learners to cover material during a time that is convenient for them each week. Students are encouraged to check in with the teacher weekly via the Outschool classroom, which will allow for more engagement between the teacher and learner. After weekly lessons, students can collaborate with their peers by replying to the announcements and lesson postings in the Outschool classroom. Participation will include an introduction post, discussion posts, assignments, and projects in the Classroom. This allows students to process what they are learning by collaborating with peers and the teacher. Participation in assignments allows students to practice and reinforce learning. This also provides opportunities for the teacher to gauge student learning and provide interventions if necessary. Private messages or classroom comments are usually responded to within 24 hours with the exception of weekends. *Grades will be provided upon request. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any requests or accommodations.
