Crack the Code With Equivalent Fractions
What's included

I will review the meaning of equivalent fractions with the learners: they are different fractions that represent the same value, such as 1/2 is equal to 2/4, which is equal to 3/6. Each learner will receive an electronic file with a fraction strip to label and color. We'll draw candy bars and pizzas and divide them up to compare fractions. We will practice the algorithm used to find equivalent fractions as well. This is the "secret code" that reveals the solution. Then we'll play a game to find the missing numbers that will make equivalent fractions. Learners should have some prior basic knowledge of fractions, and how to multiply and divide whole numbers. My approach to math is that it is a fun puzzle and once you know the code, it's easy to unlock the solution.
Learning Goals
Students will understand the meaning of equivalent fractions.
Students will be able to find equivalent fractions using a fraction strip.
Students will be able to find equivalent fractions using the algorithm that multiplies or divides both the numerator and denominator by the same value to calculate an equivalent fraction.

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a kid, I was a tree climber, frog catcher and fossil hunter. My love for the outdoors has grown throughout my life. I studied natural sciences in college and earned a bachelor's degree in natural resource management. I was a naturalist and director of an environmental education center for 10 years. A naturalist is someone who has expertise in natural history - which means that I know a lot about plants, animals, ecosystems, and the natural processes that occur on our favorite planet, Earth. Since I love learning and teaching, I earned a master's degree in teaching and am a licensed K-6 teacher. I also have a master's degree in communication. I live on a small family farm where we grow fruits, vegetables, and herbs, so not only do I teach about science and other elementary education topics, I teach about gardening, composting, and ways to enjoy and appreciate the natural world around us.
