US Grade 2 - 5
Intermediate Level
The students will learn the fundamentals of developing their pieces wisely, by controlling the center of the board, getting the knights and bishops active at the beginning, castling their king, connecting their rooks, and not moving their queen and rook early in the game. We will study a game showing an example of poor development and study a game showing an example of good development. The students will learn about not moving too many pawns at the beginning and to not move the same pieces over and over.
Learning Goals
By learning the fundamentals of developing their pieces wisely, the students will improve their game by not falling into common traps experienced by many chess players.

I am a retired public school teacher of 26 years and currently am a Supervisor of Academic Programming for the Central New York Chess organization on Outschool (https://outschool.com/teachers/CENTRAL-NY-CHESS-INC?usid=wUq7nkLS&signup=true&authTrigger=follow_teacher&follow=true&utm_campaign=share_leader_link). I have taught children and adults in Beginning and Intermediate 1 Chess classes for 23 years in after school programs, summer Chess Camps, online in my Cool Chess classes and now for Central New York Chess. I love to see how Chess helps the brain to think, to make predictions, to sequence, see patterns, etc. I love to see when a student learns how to checkmate and improves upon their game! I teach One Time Cool Chess classes and Private and Multi-Day Classes with Central New York Chess. I enjoy Art, Chess, Scrapbooking, and Travel! I hope to see you in my chess classes soon!
