How is your class structured?
We will work through one problem at a time. The student will have a chance to try the problem independently. If they get stuck, I will step in to assist them. The student can either work with paper and pencil or show their work on an interactive whiteboard called Google Jamboard that I will be able to view as well. In the following week's lesson I will make an individualized lesson to focus on the problem types that the student needs more practice with. Each week we will build on the skills from the previous week until they have mastered each problem type.

Students will learn problem solving skills and increase their ability to persevere through challenging math problems. This will also come along with new math skills they may not previously have learned. Students should feel more confident and prepared to participate in math competitions after this course.

Here is a sample of topics that students will learn.

1. Week of 10/1/23: Money
2. Week of 10/7/23: Bar Models to solve Word Problems
3. Week of 10/14/23: Geometry
4. Week of 10/21/23: Patterns

Here are a few sample questions. Have your child try them out to see if the class would be a good fit.

1. Julia had 200 marbles. First she was able to double that amount. Next she was able to increase the new amount by 150. After that the total amount was cut in half. Julia now has ____ marbles.

2. Rafael's comic book collection is worth twice as much in the US as it would be worth in country X. In country Y his collection is worth 5 times as much as it would be in country X. If Rafael's comic book collection is worth $90 in the US, how much would it be worth in country Y?

3. Corrine is as much taller than her sister Chelsea as Chelsea is taller than their younger brother Dave. Corrine is 4'4" tall and Chelsea is 3'11" tall. That means that Dave is ___'___" tall.

Each week we will cover new problems. This is an ongoing class and students can join at any time. Please reach out if the scheduled times don't work for you, but you are still interested. We can work together to find a time that works.
