Mental Math for Middle Grades

Class will be led using Number Talks.  The teacher will pose a problem to students.  Ex: 14 x 25. Students will try to solve the problem in their head.  After a few minutes students will share the strategies they used to solve the problem.  Please see the video above for a more specific example of how class will be led.

Over time topics covered will include
-Subtraction ex: 63-28
-Addition ex: 53 + 38
-Multiplication ex: 9 x 23
-Division ex: 468 ÷ 40
-Fractions ex: 1/4 of 24
-Decimals ex: 0.24 x 6.3
-Percents ex: 85% of 60

Here is a sample schedule
⇢ Week of (January 6, 2025): Multiplication using halving and doubling
⇢ Week of (January 13, 2025): Multiplication using breaking down into addends
⇢ Week of (January 27, 2025): Multiplication using factoring
⇢ Week of (February 3, 2025): Multiplication by rounding and adjusting

All problems will be solved mentally without any pen or paper.  I will annotate students' thoughts on the Zoom whiteboard to help them follow along, but students will not need to have any supplies with them.

Problems used during each class will depend of the levels of students in each class.  I will assess and adjust as we go to try to make the questions the exact right level for your child.
