In this course students will spend the first 15 minutes working independently on competition problems. During the second half of the session we will go over how to solve the problems. Here are some sample problems you can have your child try to see if this course is a good fit. Students should be able to attempt these problems, although they may not be able to solve them independently yet. If your child struggles to start the problems at all, then this may not be the correct level. 1) There are 5 jars on the teacher's desk filled with either all red or all green candies. The 5 jars contain 16, 18, 22, 24 or 34 candies. If there are twice as many green candies as red candies, which 2 jars contain the red candies? 2) Joan has $26, Connie has $14 and Donna has $8. Joan gives Connie and Donna an amount of money equal to the amount they each have. Then Connie gives Joan and Donna what they then have. Finally, Donna gives Joan and Connie an amount of money that they each now have. Joan now has $____ 3) A farm has pigs, cows and chickens. The number of cows is one more than the number of pigs. The number of chickens is three times the number of cows. If the farm has between 201 and 210 animals, what is the maximum number of chickens on the farm? Lessons will not build on each other, so feel free to join at any point. Here is a sample schedule although topics will vary by week. 1. Week of 1/6/24: Money 2. Week of 1/13/24: Bar Models to solve Word Problems 3. Week of 1/27/24: Geometry 4. Week of 2/3/24: Patterns
