There is an old adage in chess that say, "Play the opening like a book, the middlegame like a magician, and the endgame like a machine." In this class, students will learn the basic principles that will allow them to play the endgame "like a machine". Topics will include the following: 1) Five endgame patterns: King-Queen, King-Rook, Two Rooks, Two Bishops, and Rook-Knight. 2) Pawn promotion tactics and achieving pawn breakthroughs. 3) A practical endgame study from a Grandmaster-level chess game. My digital board editor, which will be visible students, will contain all the positions and allow me to draw analysis arrows and move the pieces. Students will at times be asked to take a few seconds to look at a position and suggest the winning move, after which we will see whether the move would work. Students need to know the basics of chess, namely how the pieces move and what check/checkmate is, but no other experience is required. Students are welcome to have a chessboard in front of them and move pieces on their own board, but it is not required.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, Outschool students! My name is Josiah and, like many of you guys, I'm a student too because I'm always learning. In my free time, study everything from theology to theoretical physics—seriously. There are few, if any, subjects I do not find interesting. While at university, where I graduated summa cum laude with a B. A. and departmental honors in History, I took advanced courses in economics, philosophy, English literature, theology, music, politics, and contemporary physics topics. I am also an accomplished musician, having studied classical piano, violin, voice, and choral/orchestral conducting at a conservatory level. Any chance I get to share my passions with others is a treasured opportunity.
When I’m not reading a book or practicing an instrument, I enjoy playing (and watching) sports, running, writing, and volunteering with my church.
