From the start, The Legend of Zelda has helped to define excellence in video game design, blending storytelling, exploration, and technology. For anyone who loves video games and wants to develop their own someday, a close study of the series will provide an important foundation to build upon. In our first meeting, we'll discuss the history and gameplay of the original NES Legend of Zelda in detail. Playing the original game (in any of its releases) or watching a video of a playthrough is strongly recommended, as I'll elicit comments and questions during the live discussion. The second session will be an introduction to the rest of the Zelda series, taking note of consistent themes and important developments in each of the sequels. Some recommendations for where to begin learning how to code and design games will be discussed as well. Our final class will focus on Breath of the Wild. We'll discuss the implications of the open world as a game feature and as a powerful metaphor for creativity, and look forward to possible future sequels. Students will have a chance to share their own projects they have planned or works in progress. Further resources for video game study will be suggested.

Students will gain a deep familiarity with the Legend of Zelda series and be introduced to key facets of video game design.
