Class Experience
US Grade 2 - 5
Intermediate Level
In this course, students will build their word problem solving skills, continuing to use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division--thus building those skills simultaneously. Students should be competent with 1-step word problems and should be familiar with the four math operations. Each week, students will be provided with a Nearpod activity that will include lecture videos and interactive activities, explaining how to solve the types of two-step problems for the given week. Students will also be provided about 10 word problems to solve each week. At the end of each week, students will find real-world examples of that week's math operation and write a word problem about it. In the final week, students will share their word problems with each other and the teacher will assign the problems so that they can solve each other's word problems. The plan for the class will be as follows: Week 1: 2-Step Word Problems Using Addition and Subtraction Week 2: 2-Step Word Problems Using Addition and Multiplication Week 3: 2-Step Word Problems Using Addition and Division Week 4: 2-Step Word Problems Using Subtraction and Multiplication Week 5: 2-Step Word Problems Using Subtraction and Division Week 6: 2-Step Word Problems Using Multiplication and Division Week 7: Using Critical Thinking Skills to Determine Which Operations to Use Week 8: Group Project -- Solving Each Others Word Problems

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a nuclear engineering graduate from South Carolina State University with a Bachelor's in Science. I began graduate school for a PhD in Nuclear Engineering, but due to health issues I decided to leave school and pursue my passions elsewhere--like here!
Thus, it may go without saying that a lot of classes I offer are math and science (particularly nuclear science) related.
If you have anything specific you would like to see a class on, please feel free to message me, and I will let you know if I feel comfortable teaching that topic (if I do, I will make it the next class I start offering!). Also, feel free to request class sections at other times than when I offer them; I will be sure to keep my availability updated and will be happy to see you at any of these times! If you have any questions, please feel free to message me.
Much of my teaching background is in tutoring. I have listings set up for private lessons, so feel free to message me if you are interested! You will notice that my classes are a lot shorter than others, both in the length of each meeting and the number of weeks my classes run. This is because I break up concepts into their integral parts so that students can come for exactly what they need help with and skip over the parts that they are superstars at. :) Therefore, be sure to read the class descriptions carefully and select the class(es) that will best help your student!
I hope to see you and your students in class soon!
