Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Hello! In this Building a Dungeons and Dragons Character class, we will be going through the steps of creating a character in order to play the game! We will be going through The Player's Handbook (digital copy will be provided) in order to look at the options required to make a fun, interesting, and unique character! We will start the class with introductions, why you are interested in the game, and then going through the process all together as a class. My teaching style focuses on the student more than anything else. I want to be able to bring your ideas to life in a character that you will enjoy playing and growing with as you play the game. We will be using Zoom and the screenshare functions to help walk through the process. If students have questions or concerns, the chat box will be a frequent use in order for me to catch all questions and help where necessary. I will also provide a PowerPoint to follow along and to include a formal introduction to what Dungeons and Dragons is and why characters are needed to play! We will have discussions, share ideas, and share our excitement as we bring these characters to life. There is no previous knowledge required for this class, just the proper technology and a general interest in playing Dungeons and Dragons.
Learning Goals
Students will learn what the game Dungeons and Dragons is, the importance of creating a character in order to play the game, how your decisions/stats/choices will influence the course of the game, and allow the student to learn/exercise their creativity side through creating a background story/story for their characters.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
If students want to play Dungeons and Dragons after creating their characters with me, I encourage to look for age-appropriate content as a lot of written, formal campaigns can contain mature content and difficult themes. Please reach out for safe materials for your student to use and play with if needed.
Supply List
PDF materials will be provided for the learners of everything they will need. Students may need a pencil, paper, or a notebook to keep track of the steps or can use a digital service such as an online document to type things out on.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
We will refer to the Player's Handbook written by The Wizards of the Coast (Dungeons and Dragons company), a pdf character sheet to fill in information and stats, as well as teacher-created powerpoints that will help guide the students through the creation process. All materials will be provided in pdf format to be downloaded, but if you would like to look for your own materials or purchase the official book yourself, it would be an aid in the character building process, however, not required at all.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Violet Wallace and I teach a variety of subjects and topics from debate and persuasion to character building, and even Dungeons and Dragons! When it comes to my teaching career, I have taught full time for 3 years now; one year in Canada in Adult Education teaching English Language Arts and Computer Studies and two years in the UK covering subjects from English Language Arts, Religious Studies, Photography, French, Spanish, and a bit of Biology! I believe that teachers need to be passionate about what they teach, caring and understanding to their students, and to be the best mentors/support systems they can be for their students. Progress is important and if we are having fun while being challenged along the way, a lot of growth will happen naturally in the classroom. I also have a pet cat named Wasabi who may make the occasional appearance in class!
