Class Experience
***Restructured for remote learning during social distancing. *** If you have a teenager looking for something fun to do during this difficult period, why not let them engage in a fun at-home science project? This course will be a fun, discussion based course where students work on their own home science projects with a group of excited teens around the world. This is both a fun release of creative energy and an educational experience. Students will learn about the scientific method and get the opportunity to analyze their own data and practice writing a scientific report. This course is geared towards high school students interested in using the scientific method to investigate the world. Students will choose their own project, which can be an experiment or an observational study in any area, including biology, environmental science, chemistry, physics, psychology, sociology, linguistics, geology etc. Not only will students learn about the scientific method, they will get to apply it to a scientific question that interests them. There will be a few live meetings throughout the course to brainstorm ideas and discuss project progress. These meetings will be decided upon based on the progress and availability of the students. Topics covered in this course: -The scientific method -Asking good scientific questions -Formulating hypotheses -Finding, reading and citing scientific literature -Designing scientific methods -Data collection -Basics of statistics -Graphing with Excel -Writing a scientific paper Course Structure: The beginning of the course will consist of an introductory video lecture about the scientific method. Students will be assessed on this information via an online quiz with feedback from the teacher. There will be another lecture on scientific literature with live video office hours to assist students with researching their desired topic. Students will complete a literature review draft, which they will peer-review among themselves using an instructor-provided rubric before turning in a final draft for instructor feedback. The second part of the course will allow students brainstorm scientific questions and methods while using their classmates and instructor as a springboard to bounce ideas off of. This will be done through the discussion board and live check-ins. This discussion will continue as students begin data collection. The discussion board will be a place to discuss things that are going well and any roadblocks that might arise. Although each student will be working on their own individual project, their peers and instructor will be there to help along the way. The final part of the class will feature a couple video lectures on statistics, making figures, drawing conclusions and writing scientific papers. Students will prepare a rough draft of their paper for peer-review. The final paper will be sent to me for feedback. At the end of the course we will schedule an online meeting for students to present their project to the class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a research scientist by trade and I have been conducting independent scientific research in academia for 6 years. I have tackled many scientific questions, but I first found my spark doing scientific research participating in my 8th grade science fair. Many students don't have the opportunity to conduct an independent research project, which is a shame because this is my favorite part of science. My goal is to expose students to what real scientific research is like. A lot of students are TAUGHT science, but I want to teach them how to DO science.
