Sink or Float! Buoyancy and Origami Boats
Class experience
-Have you ever wondered if a boat made of paper could float? In this class we will make two boats out of paper and test them on the waters ourselves. -We will practice making predictions by stating what boat design we think will be the strongest of our two boats. -We will then test the limits of our boats by placing pennies, buttons, or marbles on your boat to see how strong it is (how much weight it can hold.) -At the end of class we will discuss our results and see which boat design...
-Students will gain experience making predictions, and then conducting a quick experiment to verify or disprove their prediction. -Students will gain practice with public speaking as they state their prediction for the strongest boat in front of their peers. -Students will learn how to fold two types of boats.
During my time working in Montessori schools I was given the opportunity to design and implement a summer camp program that integrated scientific and cultural exploration with hands-on projects. One of our camp sessions was a STEM camp that covered the basic laws of physics (Newton's laws of motion) and then provided campers with an experiential opportunity to apply what they had learned. It was a joy to teach and assist my students as they conquered these previously uncharted territories and I am only too happy to replicate that adventure here on Outschool.
-Two sheets of construction paper. -A large bowl of water or you can use a sink filled with water (to sink our boats in) -Something to sink the boats, we usually use coins, or legos, blocks, pebbles or beads.
