Description
Class Experience
During this class students will receive direct instruction, participate in real time search and practice activities, engage in facilitated discussions with each other and the instructor. The class begins with short instructions from the teacher, a live demonstration of search techniques, continues with real time practice and wraps up with interactive discussions and review of practice activities. Topics included are: What are search engines and how are they useful, how does Google retrieve...
Students will be able to effectively identify quality information via web searching. Students will be able to quickly evaluate an information source for validity. Students will be able to evaluate information on Wikipedia to expand their search strategies.
The first building block to learning is acquiring information and helping students understand the process of identifying and evaluating information is critical to that process and their future as a lifelong learner. If a person can learn how to access and review quality information, then they can learn anything at anytime without limitations. My expertise as an Information Literacy librarian prepares me to teach this topic to learners of all ages. Including hands on search opportunities during class time with immediate feedback for learners make each class session a learning moment that can be immediately implemented in other areas of study.
A practice handout will be provided for each learner.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
