Class Experience

It is very difficult to put an age on a class like this. Kids are ready to read at many different ages. Some are 3, some are 6. If you are unsure, please reach out to me. I love chatting with families.
___________________________________________________________________
Students know most of the lowercase letter names before attending this class. Our goal will be to learn the sounds and to learn sight words.

Learning to read includes these three pieces and I will work on all of them:

-phonological awareness: hearing the difference in sounds, adding and subtracting sounds
-oral language: speaking and listening skills
-phonics: teaching the sounds for each letter
____________________________________________________________________
You will notice a lot of listening and repeating sounds. These are vital for a reading program. I have a system that I will use to deliver these skills.

You will also notice a lot of repetition on my part. This is deliberate and necessary. We will help our brains remember and understand by repeating activities.

My style is calm and patient. I will always offer corrections in a gentle manner.

____________________________________________________________________
This is a tentative schedule. Please know that I will adjust this as necessary based on the students' abilities. I am basing the lessons on the SIPPS program and the order it uses.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Does your child love science? Let's work on that together!

My semester-long STEM classes have inspired me to create summer camps around insects, animals, rainbows, camping, and ocean creatures.

I have 8 unique camp courses this summer that will spark your child's interest in chemistry and biology.

I believe that when children are excited about a topic, it is an opportunity to encourage learning...and reading!

I want all students to become bookworms. I believe it is possible, even for below-level students, reluctant readers, or non-native speakers.

Each and every class I make contains powerful words and language skills. I use loads of books as I plan and enjoy sharing the titles with my learners.

My experience:

-3 years teaching preschool

-20 years as an elementary school teacher

-4 years as an ESL teacher for ages 3-adult

-3 years of freelance writing, including creating curricula for two e-learning companies

-1 year editing books for a reading app

-Master’s degree in Education

-TESOL certificate

I have a calm, patient teaching style and have worked with:

-special needs students
-children with speech issues
-ESL students
-homebound students
-students with mental health disorders

When I am not teaching, I am reading, cooking, gardening, or walking. (And creating more classes!)

I cannot wait to see you in my class!
