In this early reading intermediate course for kindergarten and 1st grade, we will learn phonics skills that have long vowel sounds, practice spelling and reading. Great supplement for homeschool, afterschool and summer enrichment. Week 1Lesson 1Week 1: Silent (Magic) e Words: silent a and silent e sound (shape, pete)This week’s lesson, we will use an anchor chart to go over silent e’s rule and chant to practice the long a/e sounds. We will have a movement break to practice the sounds. We will use a graphic organizer, to decode and blend a word and then read a sentence. In the spelling component, we will follow 3 steps to practice spelling a silent e word and then read a sentence. For the remainder of the class, we will play games to reinforce reading silent e words with long a/e sounds.Week 2Lesson 2Week 2: Silent (Magic) e Words: silent i and silent o sound (pine, hole)This week’s lesson, we will use an anchor chart to review silent e’s rule and chant to practice the long i/o sounds. We will have a movement break to practice the sounds. We will use a graphic organizer, to decode and blend a word and then read a sentence. In the spelling component, we will follow 3 steps to practice spelling a y a a vowel word and then read a sentence. For the remainder of the class, we will play games to reinforce reading y as a vowel with long i sound.Week 9Lesson 9Week 9: Y as a vowel: long e sound (cherry)This week’s lesson, we will use an anchor chart to go over the y as a vowel long e rule and chant to practice the sound. We will have a movement break to practice the sounds. We will use a graphic organizer, to decode and blend a word and then read a sentence. In the spelling component, we will follow 3 steps to practice spelling a y a a vowel word and then read a sentence. For the remainder of the class, we will play games to reinforce reading y as a vowel with long e sound.Week 10Lesson 10Week 10: Open Syllables (bro, spla)This week's lesson will focus on what a syllable and open syllable is? They will be introduced to the long vowel marking called a macron. We will practice identifying and sounding out open syllables through playing games.Week 11Lesson 11Week 11: V/CV Syllable Pattern (ro/bot)This week’s lesson, while using a graphic organizer, we will learn a strategy to find the V/CV syllable pattern, learn about the rule on dividing a V/CV word so that has two syllables and the vowel sound is long in the first syllable. We will complete two activities: sounding out V/CV words, reading sentences and spelling a V/CV word. The remainder of the class, we will play games to reinforce V/CV words.
-Students will learn about 5 phonics skills. -Through chants or songs, students will learn the long vowel sounds. -Using graphic organizers and finger tapping, students will learn how to decode and blend phonics skills. -Students will be introduced to long vowel markings (macron). -Students will look for chunks in words to sound out. -Students will practice reading simple sentences and spelling. Learners will practice decoding, blend, spell, write and read words and/or sentences.
I have a master's degree in education (M.S. Ed). I've received state certifications in Early Childhood Education (Birth-2) and Students with Disabilities (Grades 1-6) Over 20 years' experience in elementary education especially learners from ages 5-8. I have a Classroom Educator Level Certificate in Orton Gillingham Reading Approach to help learners with dyslexia however it can benefit all learners.
Homework Offered
(OPTIONAL) I will upload to the classroom either pdfs, google forms and or videos to practice the skill. Learners are welcome to send pictures of their completed work.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
