Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Beginner Level
*This 9 week course teaches the 8 parts of speech by discovering them in classic children's literature.

*Students who complete this course will be prepared to take the ongoing class "Learning Grammar Through Literature"

*In each class we will learn one part of speech beginning with nouns, then verbs, adjectives, pronouns, prepositions, adverbs, conjunctions and interjections. We will play a short game to practice our knowledge of that part of speech.

*We will use sentences from classic children's literature to locate each week's part of speech focus. I will give a brief summary of the book, we will read the sentence and talk about any tricky spellings or unknown vocabulary.

*Every week has a built in review and builds upon the previous week. By the end of the course students will be able to locate each part of speech in a given sentence.

*Students will be taught some questions to ask when finding each part of speech
(Nouns and Pronouns answer the questions Who? and What?) as well as a handy poem for memorizing the parts of speech.

*Each week students will be sent a pdf of that week's sentence(s). Students can print them out and write on them during class OR if they are Zoom savvy they can use annotating tools to mark on the screen. (the majority of students in the "Learning Grammar Through Literature" class use annotating tools)

*In week 5 they will be sent preposition list.
*In week 8 they will be sent a list of a list of questions to ask when finding the parts of speech
(Both of these lists are used in the Learning Grammar Through Literature class)
