DESCRIPTION: Upon the completion of this course students will be able to define basic Latin vocabulary of approximately 300-400 words; reproduce paradigms of basic Latin forms; identify the grammatical forms and syntactical functions of Latin words of these nouns, adjectives, and verbs; and translate basic Latin sentences and explain their syntax; begin to compose short sentences in Latin. Each class will introduce a new grammar concept, practice and review previous material, and discuss a cultural theme. Beyond acquiring the skills to translate Latin, students will also be learning about the culture, literature, and history of the Classical world. Their English vocabulary will improve. They will better understand English grammar and syntax. And they will build a foundation for learning other languages, particularly Romance languages. Depending on the how the pace of the course proceeds, students will be introduced to their first Latin novella towards the end of this course. This reading will be provided to the students and will be read in class. If students need more time practicing the new Latin grammar concepts introduced in this course, then we will focus on in-class practice and exercises and not read the novella. This is determined by the students. PREREQUISITE: Students must have completed Cambridge Latin Unit 1 AND Stages 13-15 before enrolling in this course or an equivalent. Feel free to message me with any questions. MATERIALS: This class will use Google drive, google docs, Nearpod.com, Gimkit, and Magistrula.com to manage assignments and practice exercises. It will also use “Nearpod” for live classes which encourages student engagement and interaction. This will require students to “join” each live class through a Nearpod code so that they can interact with the slides by answering questions, filling in blanks, and drawing. The textbook is REQUIRED for this course. Please see "learner supply list" for the specific text learners will need. INDEPENDENT STUDY: since this course only meets once a week there is an aspect of independent studying/practicing. The course is designed as a 1-2 course: 1 day of live instruction and practice and 2 days of independent reading/practice. Students are always encouraged to reach out with any questions that they have about the exercises and readings assigned. Some of these readings and exercises we review in class.
