Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 3
Beginner Level
This course is designed to get young learners excited about learning Latin and other World Languages. Students will repeat words and phrases and sing songs (yes, lots of songs!) in Latin each week. Some lessons will be focused more on Ancient Roman history, culture, mythology; and even on those days, Latin words and phrases will appear in class. My teaching style is flexible and fun. I use props as well as screen-share slides with words and pictures to keep visual learners engaged. I often post optional worksheets or coloring pages that accompany lessons to the Classroom. Questions, comments, and observations from students are welcome and encouraged! Students will practice good Zoom classroom manners in this class by raising their hands and waiting their turn before speaking.

Check the schedule* below for updates and new topics added each term! Each lesson will feature a Color Diei (Color of the Day), an Animal Diei (Animal of the Day), and a Deus/Dea Diei (God or Goddess of the Day - these we will learn both the Greek and Roman names for, too!). Students who attend for several months can expect to hear repeats here; but as one of my own teachers used to say, repetition is the mother of learning! The lesson topic listed in the schedule below will be our bigger focus each week (usually about 7-10 minutes of discussion on that topic).

*Schedule Notes:
1) the schedule is subject to change
2) students who attend for several months will eventually see the same focus lessons; I will announce in the Classroom prior to repeating topics.

Parental Guidance
Some topics of Roman history and mythology may be sensitive for young learners. The history of Pompeii, for example, includes the eruption of a volcano that buried several cities. The disaster is a tremendous opportunity for students to learn about Roman culture, but at the expense of the lives of many ancient people. Another potentially sensitive topic is gladiator combat that occurred in the amphitheaters of ancient Rome. Wars frequently enter our discussion, as well as assassinations and other acts of violence that had historical significance. Roman bathing customs were also quite different from ours, and some learners may feel uncomfortable hearing about these. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me with questions or concerns!

Hello! I’m Larissa Laver and I’ve been teaching since 2008. I’ve worked with young children through young adults over the years: I have taught Pre-K through collegiate level courses and literally every grade in between at some point in my career. I mainly have taught Latin language from elementary through advanced levels, and occasionally teach Ancient Greek as well. I also teach Ancient Greek and Roman History courses, Classical Mythology, and the Homeric Epics. I have traveled extensively in Greece and Italy, and what I learned on those adventures often finds its way into my lessons.

I consider myself a lifelong learner and am always digging deeper to discover more about the world we live in, its history, peoples, languages, religions, cuisines, and more! I also love when my students challenge me with their amazing questions and observations. I spend much time reading and researching in the hopes of being a better citizen of the world and educator.

When I'm not engaged in academic pursuits, I spend my time with my amazing husband. Together we love to travel, play tennis, and hang out with our pet chickens! When I'm on my own, I love kickboxing, yoga (sometimes outside with the chickens!), and gardening (also with the chickens).
