Word Detectives! | Greek & Latin Roots | Vocabulary, Spelling, & Word Study

Almost 70% of the English Language is derived from Greek and Latin languages. When students learn these "building blocks," it becomes easy for them to recognize and decode unfamiliar words that are related to a known root. Learners need to be explicitly taught the meanings of Greek and Latin roots so they can comprehend texts and technical vocabulary found in science and other content areas.

Having solid knowledge of Greek and Latin roots will support learners in scoring high on standardized tests, including the vocabulary and reading sections of the ACT and SAT.

📃Learners will be given a unique code after class to the Kahoot we use in class so they can choose to play again at home to reinforce the skills we practiced in class.

📃A printable list of the roots, words, and definitions will be posted in the Outschool classroom each week for further study and future reference.

*Leaves of Learning Academy is an organization on Outschool with about 18 teachers. Occasionally, the teacher for this class may not be able to teach and a substitute teacher from the organization will take her place. Only teachers trained to teach this class will serve as a possible substitute for the class.
