What's included

6 live meetings
3 in-class hours
Homework
1 hour per week. Homework will be recommended and is encouraged for those who would like to improve faster, but it will not be required. It is up to each dancer as to whether or not they would like to practice and for how long. Additional resources like YouTube videos may be suggested to check out after class to view famous dancers, but it is also optional.
Assessment
Dancers will constantly get live feedback from teacher during class. Class recommendations will be given at the end of the semester, if students wish to continue their tap dance studies.

Class Experience

This energetic, semester long course will focus on learning the basics of Broadway style tap while learning a fun recital dance. This class is for students with zero to limited dance experience and is conducted at a beginner pace. This course is perfect for aspiring musical theater performers who will need basic Broadway tap for future auditions and for those who just want to see what Broadway tap is like.

Tap shoes are optional (but highly recommended), as dancers can either use tennis shoes or dance bare foot. If using tap shoes, a small tap board is recommended (1/4 inc. plywood square in whatever size you desire but not smaller than 2 ft x 2ft) in order to protect the floor in your home.

Each week we will build upon previously learned skills to learn new, more complicated steps and to master proper technique. The first part of every class will be dedicated to warm ups and learning new Broadway style tap steps and technique practice. During the last section of class we will have fun adding on to our recital dance and practicing our newly learned Broadway skills in fun ways while letting our personalities shine.

I will teach by demonstration and verbal explanation. Each child will have a chance to voluntarily demonstrate throughout the semester for individual feedback that the entire group can learn from. General corrections, fun facts, and dance tips will be given to the entire class throughout each lesson, as well.

At the culmination of the semester, we will celebrate our progress by performing our short recital piece together and by discussing how far we have come in just 6 weeks!
Learning Goals
Students will be able to:
-name and perform basic Broadway style tap steps
-count music and count steps
-sing and clap rhythms
-use their skills in a short recital dance taught by the teacher

Parental Guidance
If students need help staying on task or working the computer or app, parents may wish to monitor from the same room or within sight distance for the first few lessons. The room should be as free of distractions as possible and student should have at least a few feet to move around. Please advise teacher in advance of any special needs or any recent injuries that will limit movement. While great caution is taken and skills will be appropriate for beginner students, accidental falls, etc. can still happen and teacher is not responsible for any injuries that occur during the course of the classes. Please do not use cardboard as dance floor as this is a hazard (it will easily slide out from under tapper's feet).
Supply List
Recommended clothing:
-leggings or shorts and form fitting shirt or top (baggy tops or bottoms make it hard to give corrections for upper body placement and difficult to tell if their legs are bent or straight); alternatively leotard and tights are best, but not required
Optional:
-tap shoes and tap board (1/4 inch cut of plywood 2' x 3' or larger)
*do not use cardboard as this will slide out from under dancers feet and is a hazard
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
