Be a Text Detective & Word Inspector! Reading Comprehension & Grammar Practice

In this ongoing class, learners will become text detectives & word inspectors! Learners will find the evidence from the passages to prove their answers and comprehension of the text. Using the same passage, learners will then identify parts of speech, contractions, compound words, plural form, etc.

This class uses an active reading strategy – by color-coding our answers – with non-fiction informational text passages. Referring back to the text in order to support an answer is an important skill for readers to learn.  To prove basic comprehension skills, we will read short passages and underline in the text (with a colored pencil or crayon) where learners find their answers.  Color-coding helps students to organize their thinking. Learners will also write their answers using complete sentences. Using the same passage, learners will work on their grammar skills by identifying verb, adjectives, pronouns etc.  I will give a brief review of each grammar concept before each grammar question so it is clear to learners what they are looking for in the passage, but it is beneficial to have basic knowledge of these grammar concepts before this class.

During the class, I will be displaying the passages on the screen. However, students will benefit the most from this activity if they print their own copy of the passages so that they can actively color-code the answers.
