Class Experience

Flowcharts: What does this mean and why should I care? Good question. A flowchart is used to break big ideas into small, bite-sized pieces that are expressed visually. Knowing how to flowchart is like having access to a Universal language which makes it possible to communicate all sorts of things with all sorts of people. Isn’t that cool?

In general, when you have to explain a project or walk through a process, you would find flowcharts - a great helpful tool. They are the graphical representation of your thinking process. It allows you to chalk out your ideas and thoughts in a logical and organized fashion. Depending on what you're trying to accomplish - a simple recipe to a complex programming logic - chances are, there's a flowchart to help. They're versatile and can be used to meet a range of needs.

Nowadays, it’s an almost forgotten art :-(. With this class, I would like to bring this old technique back as a starting point for effective and efficient way to lay out processes and workflows.

First Week:
1. What is a flowchart?
2. Advantages of a flowchart.
3. Define the basic symbols of a flow chart
4. Identify how to apply flow chart symbols to a simple set of directions
5. Examples

Second Week:
1. Why do we need variables?
2. Understand the if.. else. There will be many situations when you will be given two or more options and you will have to select an option based on the given conditions. If .. else helps in this situations
3. Examples

Please note: Learners will be understanding the concepts of programming by drawing flowchart (universal language) and not coding. Homework will be given as examples to draw flowcharts for different scenarios.

With a degree in Computer Engineering, I have been teaching Math and Computer Science for more than 15 years. I have also coached First Lego League team of 10 students and helped the team reach regional championships.

I believe in project based learning as it requires a thorough understanding of concept, and not just recall or recognition. It can be used to apply an academic content in new contexts. And, it starts with an inquiry, which leads to a deeper learning of not only an academic content but also use of it in a real world applications.
