Homework
1-2 hours per week. Students will be required to prepare for their presentation projects outside of class time.

Class Experience

Prerequisite:  Must have taken a Beginning ASL class with me OR have a working ASL vocabulary of at least 150 words, be able to count to 100 in ASL and effectively fingerspell.  

The purpose of this class is to be introduced to ASL grammar, classifiers, mouth morphemes, facial expressions, body language, signing V and learn how to apply this knowledge to effectively communicate in  ASL.  Students will have a performance element of this class in which they will be asked to properly introduce themselves, tell a personal narrative and tell a familiar fairy tale using good ASL grammar.  Other topics of discussion will include types and certifications of interpreters, cochlear implants, deaf idioms and aspects Deaf culture. It will be important that students are serious about learning ASL and willing to put the effort into the assigned projects.  Students will be asked to keep their cameras open throughout the class unless there is a sudden interruption in their learning environment that would distract the other students. 

Week 1/Day 1
     Brief welcome and informal introductions
     Sign Systems: ASL. PSE, See, Cued, TC, Rochester 
     Special Fingerspelling rules
     Special Number Rules
     Review correct grammar for introductions (taught in beginner's class)
     Introduce additional information to include in introductions
     Model sample of introduction and assign project for next class
Day 2  
     Student's will each be given 2 minutes to introduce themselves as modeled in last class
     Types of signs
     Signs without English translation
     Idioms
     Variations
     
Week 2/Day 1
     Introduce Phonology
     5 Parameters of Sign (handshape, movement, orientation, location, non-manual markers
     Asking questions in ASL
     Body Language/Role Shifting
Day 2
      Practice asking questions using prompts given by teacher
      Concepts vs English vocabulary
      Using force, speed, repetition, circling motion to show intensity of a sign
      Noun/Verb pairs(chair vs sit)

Week 3/Day 1
      Morphology
      Classifiers - What are they?
                          Examples of classifiers and how they are used
      Classifier game - explain simple concept with only classifiers

Day 2
      Verbs - directional, plain, spatial, classifier
      State of Being Verbs
      Timing - regular, continual, repeated, extended
      Introduce project 2: personal narrative

Week 4/Day 1
    Time Signs
     Past, Present, Future (last week, this week, next week)
     Non-manual markers
     Duration - sign bigger, slower and head tilt
     Regularity

I have been an ASL interpreter in personal and educational settings.  I have a degree in Deaf Education and have taught preschool deaf children in a self contained class and interpreted for mainstreamed students at the elementary and college levels. I have been teaching Beginning ASL classes on Outschool for one year and taught Level 1 and Level 2 ASL classes at a small private college.
