Animals in World Art History: Warhol's Endangered & Vanishing Animals (13-18)
What's included
2 live meetings
2 in-class hoursClass Experience
>>>PLEASE READ BEFORE ENROLLING: The live portion of this class consists of hour-long, fast-paced, lecture-based presentations, with limited Q&A breaks as time permits -- you know your learner(s) best, so please consider if the session length and format is a good fit for them.<<< While Andy Warhol is most famous for his commercial and celebrity pop art, he was also interested in environmental conservation and created two separate series of wildlife art in support of this cause. In this class we will take a virtual tour of Warhol's Endangered Animals series from 1983 and Vanishing Animals series from 1986, both commissioned to help raise awareness and funds for species conservation, learning a bit about each animal and their current conservation status along the way. This live class will meet twice during the same week, and will consist primarily of slides accompanied by lecture, but there will be opportunities to ask questions, and of course the Classroom board will be available for open discussion before and after class as well. Students will also be given additional reading and video resources to explore in between sessions and after the final live session. In addition, there will be OPTIONAL hands-on art activities posted in the classroom that students are invited to try at home and share via the classroom board! This class is part of the ANIMALS IN WORLD ART HISTORY series.

Teacher expertise and credentials

Master's Degree in Science from American Public University
I'm a naturalist with a focus on zoology, and mainly teach animal science courses...but as part of my longstanding interests in both the animal kingdom AND art and culture, I have been conducting independent research on how animals have been depicted in art around the world. In conjunction with creating a new research blog on the subject, I am very excited to start offering a series of short courses on different subjects in Animals in World Art History in addition to my regular zoology classes!
I also have nearly two decades experience as a home education advocate, including homeschooling my own children from preschool through high school. I am a big proponent of flexible learning, individualized education, and supporting fellow neurodiverse learners, so please don't hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or requests for additional resources. We all learn in our own way and time, but everyone should have the chance to learn about how cool animals are!
