Class Experience

Students will be introduced to the scientific method. This includes how to come up with a research question, how to form a theory, what qualitative vs. quantitative variables are, what independent vs. dependent variables are, and much more! Students will have a chance both throughout the course and at the end of the course to practice what they have learned.

The course will be structured as follows:

Class One:
1. What is Science? What is Research?
2. How is Science/Research Done?
3. Qualitative vs. Quantitative Data.
4. What is a Hypothesis? How to Form a Hypothesis.
5. Part 1: The Steps of The Scientific Method. We will extensively explore each of the five steps: 1. Observation/Asking a Question, 2. Form a Hypothesis, 3. Design a Controlled Experiment, 4. Record and Analyze Results, and 5. Draw Conclusions.
6. Practice Problems

Class Two:
1. Part 2: The Steps of The Scientific Method. We will extensively explore each of the five steps: 1. Observation/Asking a Question, 2. Form a Hypothesis, 3. Design a Controlled Experiment, 4. Record and Analyze Results, and 5. Draw Conclusions. Video.
2. Independent vs. Dependent Variables.
3. Forming a Theory.
4. Control vs. Experimental Group.
5. Practice Problems.
6. Analysis and Reflection Questions.
7. Review Quiz.
8. Design Your Own Experiment.

Students will interact with the teacher and classmates via slides, video clips, practice questions, and discussion.

No knowledge of the scientific method is required to enrol in this course. This course is intended for those who have never learned it before or who want a refresher.
