Ah, a request to teach a course about serial killers, I am so excited. I am fascinated by serial killers; what caused them to murder, what was their home life like, were they abused as a child, what were their triggers, and how they chose their victims. Because of my curiosity on the subject, I took criminology courses and obtain a degree in Criminal Justice. My teaching style is casual, I like to have fun with the students. My main goal is to ensure that each student leaves my class with more knowledge than when they started. I encourage students to ask questions and speak up if they do not understand a problem and/or subject. Due to the violent, graphic, and sexual nature of several serial killer’s crimes, PARENTAL GUIDIANCE IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. I will do what I can to avoid using inappropriate words when possible. If there is serial killer that your student would like to learn about or those that you would rather they not, please feel free to contact me prior to the beginning of course. I will accommodate your suggestions and concerns the best I can. There are over 400 known serial killers in the United States alone. They date back as far as the late 1700’s. I will be unable to address them all in one course. Therefore, I will choose between 25 of them; see the list below. If we have extra time towards the end of the section I will add more. Each class the students will be listening to my lesson plans, taking notes, and asking questions. I will almost always be on camera, they can see me and interact with me during the entire class. The only homework that I will assign is to write a two-page essay in MLA form on their favorite serial killer. We will be discussing why they chose to murder, what triggered their rage, were they abused as a child, how was their homelife and childhood, how they chose their victims, and more. There are not any textbooks on this subject, so I will be using my research and essays from college, library books, and the internet. I will share newspaper articles and age appropriate YouTube videos. I start class on time, please have your child logged in and ready to go. They will need paper and writing utensil to take notes. Here is the list of the serial killers that I will be starting with. Dates and the list of serial killers are subject to change. I will post in the classroom for those who are enrolled. Please check back often if you are not enrolled. Class 1) Sept. 1 What constitutes someone to be labeled a serial killer? Tony Ables - Murdered 3 people, but was only charged with 2.
