Class Experience

*In order to participate in the course, students must know addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division*

Hello everyone and welcome,

What is the answer to this (simple) equation 5+6÷3*4-2? If you say the answer is 11, you are correct! If you say the answer is 3.5, great job for trying but that is not correct. Brief explanation: even though multiplication comes before division according to PEMDAS, there is an exception. First we solve for what is in the parenthesis, then for the exponents. For multiplication/division and addition/subtraction there is an exception. If both multiplication and division are present within the equation, then we must solve from left to right, whichever comes first. Therefore, we divide 6/3 and we get 2. Then we take the 2 and multiply it by 4, we get 8. With addition and subtraction applies the same rule, we read the equation from left to right. Therefore, 8+5 is 13. Lastly, subtract 13 minus 2 is 11. I hope this makes sense. With zoom, PowerPoint, class activity, participation, and variety of examples, the student will definitely understand the concept.

The first 20 minutes of class:
Using a PowerPoint, I will define what does order of operation means how it is used. I will identify what PEMDAS means and what the exceptions are. I will provide images for further understanding and clarification. We will spend the first twenty minutes of the class learning about PEMDAS. I will teach while students take notes. Within every slide, I will have a question that will test students understanding.

The second 20 minutes of class:
I will provide variety of examples using the whiteboard and worksheets. I will use the method, I do, we do, you do. First, I will show students the problem by working on the whiteboard. While trying to answer the question, I will ask students what step I need to do to get the answer. This will test their concentration and their learning skill. Second, I will provide a problem where we all work on the problem together. Students are encouraged to bring a paper and pencil to work on this question. During this time, students can help each other out. Third, I will provide a problem for each student to test their knowledge and what is their strength and weakness. I will work 1 on 1 with each student to ensure they are answering the problem correctly and approaching it using the correct steps.

There will be no homework assigned unless requested by the parent.

Learning Goals

Students will learn how to solve for a long equation that includes parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. They will learn the foundation and what are the exceptions to PEMDAS. They will ace order of operation and will not struggle when taking college courses.

Other Details

Supply List
Students need to bring paper and pencil to take notes and work on practice problems during class.

Hello everyone and welcome,
I am excited to teach youths about basic Algebra. I have five years of teaching experience, from preschool basic math to high school precalculus course. I have a Bachelors in Medical Studies and Masters in science of health care delivery from Arizona State University. I am applying for dental school this year.

I joined this fascinating community because I enjoy working with kids and presenting them with new lessons in unique way. I believe that every individual likes math but they struggle with it because they did not have a good math teacher. That is why I am here! I will simplify the process and approach your child in the best way that helps them retain the lesson. Using PowerPoint and white board, I will be able to break down math problems into small and simple steps that will be learned quickly and easily. I look forward to working with your child and making them ace math!
