A Hero's Journey: Analysis and Application Based on Your Favorite Literature
Class experience
In this seven-week class, students will learn to analyze and write about the hero's journey or monomyth. This class is unique in that students can choose their own literature to coincide with this literature analysis. The only conditions for selection of literature are books or stories must be Outschool appropriate, the books must be completely read within a three-week period, and protagonists must find themselves on a journey of self-discovery or emergence into being a hero. Students can...
Students will understand and write about the hero's journey through the study of their chosen work of literature. Students will write about how the protagonist in their chosen work followed the hero's journey. Students will learn to make personal applications of the lessons emphasized in their chosen work of literature and in the hero's journey.
I have master's degrees in history, professional writing, and human services counseling. Other than having studied classic and current literature, plays, and poetry in my own higher education and/or on my own over the course of many years, I also teach my own high schoolers how to understand, interpret, and appreciate literature in our homeschool. I teach several critical analysis classes via Outschool. For our homeschooling co-op, I teach middle schoolers and high schoolers how to examine classic and current poetry and literature as well as history. Classic literature and poetry are my passion.
Students will need access to a computer with word processing software or paper and pencil to take notes and write their paper. Students will need access to whatever work they choose to read and write about for this class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will be required to choose a work of classic or current fiction to read for this class. Works must be Outschool appropriate. No books with anything beyond a PG rating will be accepted.
In week six of class, students will learn how to format a paper according to the Modern Language Association.
