A Coming of Age Classic Part Two: Let's Read Anne of Avonlea

In this 11 week course, let's read the second book in the Anne of Green Gables series, Anne of Avonlea.

Class experience

I first read the Anne of Green Gables series when I was 11 years old and absolutely fell in love with the heroine Anne. She is spunky, independent, intelligent, vivacious, confident, optimistic, and determined. In college, I based part of my research for my Anthropology major around Anne of Green Gables and its themes on adversity for children or teens about to enter their adult years. I have more than 10 years of experience on this book and I am familiar with its main themes, characters, and core message points.
Students will need to buy or rent the book Anne of Avonlea.
Parents should be made aware that some of the author's (Lucy Maud Montgomery) novels and works include stories/themes that are racist or intolerant towards indigenous groups and immigrants who were arriving in North America at the beginning of the 20th century. Students should be prepared to encounter this intolerance in some chapters. When encountered, I would like students to come to class prepared to discuss it as part of the overall theme or character point in class and these discussions will be held in a safe, sensitive, and appropriate manner.
