1 hour per week. Homework is assigned each week at the end of class. Homework will be posted in the classroom. Homework may be a worksheet or experiment with mostly materials found around the house. Please allow 1-2 hours for homework each week.Letter Grade
A letter grade will be given for each homework assignment turned in. Grades and homework are not mandatory but will be given upon request or when work is turned in. A semester grade can be requested by parent/guardian.Class Experience
US Grade 5
In the Semester 2 of this General/Integrated science class (Semester 1 does not have to be taken first; they can be taken in any order), learners will be studying plants, living things, earth processes, weather, and more. This 15-week class, which covers one semester, will meet once a week and students have optional work to complete homework/labs at home. This is appropriate for 5th grade students or those who are 9-11 years of age. Get ready for fun activities and experiments! Paper and pencil will need to be available for each class. As an introduction to note-taking, there is also a Notes Sheet available for each class....easy to fill in notes that your student may use during and after class. After the first week, each class will begin with any questions the students have about the homework or material covered the week before. Then the new material for that week will be presented; slides, videos, pictures, and actual demonstrations or labs will be used throughout the course. Messages in the classroom will be utilized if students have any questions on homework throughout the week. Lots of opportunities for student discussion, some easy games played in class (matching, word scramble, students writing on board, uncovering pictures, guessing games, etc.), and experiments each week for students to do at home. Some homework assigned will be worksheets and others will be at-home experiments using household items. Please view the supply list for supplies. I will make sure to keep parents updated via classroom posts on what will be needed for the upcoming week. Homework assignments will be graded if turned in but grades are used at the parent's discretion and are not mandatory. All materials are optional. Please see the Syllabus for what exciting topic we will be talking about each week....our subjects and homework/materials. Please note, fewer numbers of students may result in a shortened class time. There will be no refunds issued for a student(s) missing class.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to explore through lecture, experiments, demonstrations, homework, and discussion the three fields of General Science....Life science, Earth science, and Physical science.

Curriculum
Follows Teacher-Created Curriculum15 Lessons
over 15 WeeksLesson 1:
Plant Kingdom
Beginning with Life Science, students will talk about the anatomy of a plant (roots, stem, and leaves) and how they help a plant survive. Homework will be a comparison and collage of edible leaves.
45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Plant Kingdom
We continue our foray into plants and talk about photosynthesis this week. Homework this week will be an experiment on what light does for a plant.
45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Science cycles
This week we explore many of the cycles we see in science, water cycle, carbon cycle, and the nitrogen cycle. Homework this week will be a core soil sample.
45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Interaction Amongst Organisms
This week, we talk about ways that different living organisms interact in commensalism, mutualism, and parasitism. Homework this week will be an experiment that investigates what controls the growth of populations.

Learning Needs
Activities are not mandatory and can be adapted to fit the needs of each individual learner. Notes and homework can be digitally manipulated if student prefers, graded or not, no reading out loud in class.
Parental Guidance
All experiments utilize household materials. Some experiments may be messy. Some also may require the use of scissors to cut something. Your learner must be mature enough in your estimation to use scissors or have an adult available to help. Please read homework beforehand to determine if experiments need to be performed outside to save the house from a mess :-)
YouTube video sections may also be used during screensharing via PowerPoint.

Teacher expertise and credentials
2 Degrees
Master's Degree from Western Governors University
Bachelor's Degree in Science from Missouri Southern State University
I was a middle school science teacher for 10 years and have been teaching on Outschool since 2020. I have also homeschooled (and graduated!) my daughter for 10 years. As a public school teacher, I taught Earth Science, Chemistry, Physical Science, Zoology, Biology, and more to hundreds of students. Science is a passion of mine and I find performing experiments both fascinating and illuminating when learning new scientific facts! In this class, students will have ample opportunity to perform their own experiments to reiterate the information they learn in class. I have my Bachelor's degree in Biology/Pre-Med and a Master's in Healthcare Administration.
