4th & 5th Grade Math: Multiplying Multi-Digit Numbers - Area Model Strategy

In this 4 week course, learners will develop a deep understanding of multiplication. This class is a great review of multiplication for learners who have already learned the content, need more support with the topic, or want a head start on multiplication. We will learn and use the area model strategy. This strategy allows learners to decompose the numbers and utilize common multiplication facts. I have found that this strategy works better when introducing multiplication rather than the traditional "stacking" or standard algorithm. There are less simple errors, and it is easier for me to assess where they may need more assistance. 

As a previous 4th grade teacher, I am very familiar with this material and how to properly plan and teach it. Learners will be taught by use of visuals, engaging games/activities, and independent practice. I will provide the support and differentiation that each learner needs to be successful! Typically, class will begin by completing a warm up or review of material from the previous week. Next, new content will be introduced. I will model the new content for the learners. Learners will then practice with me. Lastly, learners will independently solve problems, so I can informally access their understanding of the material. Learners will be given the opportunity in each class to discuss problems with each other and work together. Learners will also complete an interactive quiz via Kahoot or Nearpod at the end of each class. 

Skills needed for class:
Fluent understanding of adding and multiplication facts. 

This course will be structured as follows:
Week 1: 2 digit numbers times 1 digit numbers.
Week 2: 3-4 digit numbers times 1 digit numbers 
Week 3: 2-3 digit numbers times 2 digit numbers
Week 4: Review & Assess
