I can provide you with additional resources for your child to practice with between sessions.Assessment
At least a portion of the first booked session will be used for an initial assessment to determine learner strengths and weaknesses. Ongoing assessment will be employed after that, usually in every session in the form of an 'exit ticket' which is an independent activity that allows me (and you) to know what of the content taught that day has been mastered and what still needs to be worked on.Class Experience
US Grade 1 - 5
Please contact me to request whatever time you need - I am very flexible. The times indicated are just an example! As an experienced and certified Special Education Teacher, Special Education director at a school, certified Literacy Specialist, and an experienced tutor I am looking forward to working with your child to help them make significant progress with any math challenges they face. Many students with and without learning disabilities particularly struggle with understanding and solving math word problems. They can calculate 10 + 12 but if you give them the same numbers in a word problem they seem completely lost. I specialize in helping students visualize what is happening in a math word problem so that they can solve it. Students also often struggle with solving word problems that have more than 1 step and this is also something that I have extensive experience in helping children with doing better. I pride myself on learning what motivates each student (whether that be a reward, using specific characters in the word problems, breaks, etc) to ensure that they are focused and engaged throughout the session. This allows most students to make significant progress and increase their confidence as well as their actual ability. Seeing quick progress is key for students with learning challenges.
Learning Goals
Learning goals will be individualized based on the student's needs.
Some students need help with fluency (addition/subtraction or multiplication/division), some struggle with understanding concepts such as what does it mean to divide fractions, and some students specifically struggle with numbers when they are included in word problems even though they seem to have no difficulty with computing when numbers are by themselves. All goals will be provided to you and progress will be tracked.
Other Details
Supply List
Depending on the age and topic students are going to work on some materials might be helpful. For example, if a child is learning how to add/subtract then small items, cubes, counting blocks can be helpful to have. If students are working on understanding place value and how 10 tens = 100 then some place value manipulatives could also be helpful. I am always happy to suggest these items but they will not be required. An erasable whiteboard and dry-erase marker would be an excellent thing to have on hand during lessons if available.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a trained and certified special education teacher as well as a literacy specialist (which often comes in handy when working with students that have challenges with word problem solving). I have many years of experience tutoring one-on-one. I am also the lead person at my school working with a team of special education teachers to help our most vulnerable learners make academic progress.
I am happy to provide tutoring references.
