During our 10 weeks together, we will explore the core standards for 2nd grade math and ELA. Concepts we will cover and build upon: (ELA)- Phonics: long and short vowels. Phonics: decode regularly spelled two-syllable words with long vowels. Phonics: decode regularly spelled two-syllable words with long vowels. Phonics: identify words with inconsistent but common spelling-sound correspondences. Phonics: decode words with common prefixes and suffixes. Reading and comprehension in informational text (non fictional). Reading and comprehension in fictional text. Identifying and decoding text features. Identifying the main idea and decoding the text for comprehension. Focusing on grammar and punctuation. Identifying the meaning or "theme" in text / practicing with summarization. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Math)- Fractions, understanding fractions in a real life sense and fractions of a set practice. Identifying and creating fractions. Addition and subtraction word problems, exploring strategies to solve. Multi-step addition and subtraction word problems introduction, creating our own problems to solve. Number and operational characteristics. Even and odd numbers. Estimation. Multiplication arrays, repeated addition, and equal grouping. Skip counting. Place value. Addition and subtraction + word problems with a focus on the base ten strategy. Input / output tables. Fact families. Measurement. Number lines and how we can use them as an addition and subtraction strategy. Money (coins and bills, addition and subtraction with money). Telling time with analog and digital clocks. Geometry (polygons, angles, and their attributes).
